Private Roof Deck Garden

Private roof deck garden-stairs leading up to roof top.

Today I’m excited to share with you a great gardening idea: a private roof deck garden, or also known as a roof top garden. This roof top garden is built on top of a townhouse that provides an additional or extended living space outdoors.

It’s early spring and and the raised garden beds are bare so I wanted to show the layout and structure of the garden beds before anything goes in them.

Roof Deck Garden Considerations

A roof deck garden needs some special considerations and one of the most important of course is weight. How much weight can a roof top take? Also, there are often restrictions on the height of what you can put on a roof top. These would have to be okayed with your local city regulations.

There are three raised cedar garden beds that are 2 1/2 ft x 6 ft and a smaller one that is 37” x 37” x 44” high (the garden bed itself is 14” high).

Keeping the idea of reducing, reusing and recycling in mind, there is also a cedar compost bin that is 23” x 24” with a height of 26”. Gail Pabst from the National Garden Bureau says, “ Composting allows you to feed house plants and balcony containers, reduces household waste, and saves you a trip to the dumpster.”

There is a removable frame with plastic cover that fits on top of one of the garden beds for frost and wind protection. It is screwed on to one side of the raised garden bed and secured down to the other side with a rope or small bungee cord as wind can be an issue on top of the roof with less protection from surrounding trees, buildings etc.

The plastic is secured to the frame with staples and reinforced at the corners with plywood.

The posts at each corner of the raised garden bed are higher than the bed itself for the framed plastic to sit on top of and swing open when needed.

The kinds of plants you choose for a private roof top garden depends on what purpose you have in mind. If you’re thinking about creating a natural habitat that attracts hummingbirds, bees and butterflies, lavender and snapdragons are good choices. It can be warmer, windier and drier on top with a private roof top garden so keep that in mind when choosing plants as well. Grasses and herbs might be a good choice.
