Spring Hike in the South Okanagan- Naramata Falls

Spring is such a great time to be outdoors and enjoy seeing the earth come to life again. It’s March and we’re in the south Okanagan and I want to share a beautiful spring hike in the south Okanagan – Naramata Falls that we’ve done this month. Spring in the South Okanagan is beautiful!

This is a popular hike if you want to check it out if you’re in the area or in the area at this time of year. This hike looks much different in the spring as compared to the summer, but new growth and the singing of birds was all around. It was a great way to spend a spring day.

For all you international visitors to my blog who are wondering where or what is the Okanagan -it’s in Canada. It’s an area in the southern interior part of the province of British Columbia, which is the first province on the west side of Canada. The south Okanagan is an area surrounding the communities on or near Highway 97, which runs from Osoyoos (near the Canadian/USA border) through Vernon to Kamloops and on into the Cariboo.

The south Okanagan is known for its milder climate year round and hot summers. It is a fruit growing area with many varieties of orchards and vineyards.

The hike to Naramata Falls is 1.77 km out and back, taking about 20-30 minutes depending on your speed. There are places along the trail that cross the creek; two of the places have bridges, and a couple of places do not. You can cross over a tree that spreads across the creek or wear waterproof shoes that you don’t mind getting wet.

There are a lot of beautiful hikes in this area; I’m just sharing one of them with you today: the Naramata Falls hike.

Naramata Falls is north of the city of Penticton on the east side of Okanagan Lake towards the town of Naramata. The falls are in Naramata Creek Park about 10 km from Penticton. From Penticton, follow Naramata road about 10 km until you see the Creek Park entrance side on the right side of the road. It’s a paved road that leads to a parking lot which is where the hike starts.

This is a beautiful trail that parallels a creek and climbs up through a gulley past the Naramata falls, and at the top of the gulley intersects the Trans Canada Trail which follows the rail bed of the Kettle Valley Railway. Be aware there is poison ivy along the path but there was none up yet (too early in the season.

An area at the base of Naramata Falls.

Naramata Falls were partially frozen from the winter but a good portion had free flowing water.

If you’re looking to travel off season, when the cost of accommodation and travel is cheaper than during the high summer season and the weather is not too bad (12-15 C) this is a nice spring getaway – hiking in the south Okanagan.

TIPS FOR USING MY GARDEN PLANNER

There are some pages you may want to print more than one copy of. Print what you feel is necessary. For example, the Weekly Planner sheet you will want to print out a copy for each week you will be actively working in your garden. Same as for the Garden Daily To Do List. You may want to make several copies of the Seed Envelopes sheet if you save your own seeds.

My Garden Planner is designed so you can customize it to suit your own needs. For example, if you don’t start or plant seeds, just leave that section out. If you don’t save your own seeds, leave the seed envelope section out.

Of course you can print the planner out on your home printer, but another great option is to have it printed at your local office supply store. I know with Staples you can send the file over to them via their online site and then pick it up later that day. I used their Same Day Pickup/ Simple Print option . If you didn’t want to use a binder you could choose a heavier paper to give those pages a little bit of extra sturdiness.

You could also have the office supply store bind the planner for you in a booklet form.

I use an inexpensive ½” 3-ring binder so sheets can be added and removed at will.

The second page in My Garden Planner are side strips in different sizes (depending on your binder size) for slipping behind the plastic on the spine of the binder. There are four different binder spine sizes : 1”, 1 1/4”, 1 1/2 and 1 3/4 inch.

If you use a binder you can use the cover (title) page to slip behind the plastic on the front.

NOTE:

This is a Digital PDF that you can print out either at home or your local office supply store. No physical product will be sent.

I don’t accept returns, exchanges, or cancellations. But please contact me if you have any problems with your order.

Spring Flower Project-Cool Weather Planter

Spring blooms make my heart sing! This spring flower project-cool weather planter are plants I’ve chosen that are cold weather tolerant, which makes them a great choice for those cool spring days and nights, but still providing you with beauty until things warm up. This recycleable spring planter is also cost efficient as the plants can be reused with proper care when done blooming! I’ve placed my spring planter south facing but not in direct sun. The overhang of my roof is quite large and provides protection from full sun.

They are also perennial (hyacinth and ranunculus) or can be brought indoors or divided after the growing season (primula).

Primulas

Most primulas do best in partial shade, with moisture-retentive soil. Primulas absorb a lot of water and need soil that is constantly moist. Check the soil every couple of days to make sure that it is moist at a depth of 1 inch. Primulas are quite hardy but they don’t like harsh direct sunlight as the plant can heat up too much (temperatures higher than 18 degrees Celsius or 64 F).Primulas can take frost and will provide you with an abundance of colour until things warm up. They will bloom throughout the summer and the flowers can be deadheaded when they’re done blooming to encourage more blooms which also prevents it from going to seed. Plants can be grown indoors when they are located in a window with strong — but not direct — light. They can last up to a few months indoors. Or you can dig up the plant and divide it.

Hyacinth

Hyacinths are beautiful spring blooming bulbs that have an incredible fragrance. For the largest flowers and straightest stems, plant your hyacinths in full sun. The bulbs will also flower in light shade or half-day sun but won’t grow as tall. Once the leaves start to emerge, it takes about 3 weeks for the flowers to open. One hung to note: hyacinth bulbs are poisonous to pets. Hyacinths bloom just once per year (in the spring), but they will happily bloom again in subsequent years if provided with the proper care. They are a perennial plant.

Ranunculas

Rununculas are cool seasons flowers that are so beautiful and remind me of roses. Their rose-like petals are thin and delicate. Ranunculas like a bright location but don’t like direct sunlight and don’t do well in high temperatures. They can be planted in part sun or part shade. You can save the ranunculas bulb (called a corm) after the growing season and with proper care can replant it again next year for more beautiful blooms.

10 days later, the Hyacinth has started to open up.

Top 10 Tulip Arrangements You’ll Love

Tulips are the classic symbol of spring! They are like adding sunshine and spring warmth to a room. Here are the top 10 tulip arrangements you’ll love to help celebrate the season. Tulips are beautiful just simply placed in a vase but these tulip arrangements are a bit more dramatic and are really easy to do. You can make these from grocery store bouquets and as spring approaches and tulip season begins there will be a large variety of colors to choose from.

Because of a tulip’s bendiness, you can actually place them sideways in a clear, glass fishbowl for this look.
