Whole pumpkins can be kept in a cool dry place for several months. Carved pumpkins will last 3 -5 days depending on the weather.
How do I make a carved pumpkin last longer?
To make a carved pumpkin last longer rub a thin layer of petroleum jelly on the inside of the pumpkin to reduce mold and slow decay. Once you cut a pumpkin, you speed up the decaying process so another option is to skip carving it or you can also carve a fake pumpkin.
Pumpkin Carving Safety
Take steps to prevent hand injuries when pumpkin carving because it only takes a second for an injury to occur. Leave the carving to adults. Carve away from yourself. Carve pumpkins in a well lit area.
A soft pumpkin is easier to carve, so leave it outside for a few days to let the skin soften. Instead of using a knife, use cookie cutters and a hammer to carefully and slowly pound the cookie cutter into the pumpkin. Try painting pumpkins instead.
